Spool Sew-A-Long

Picture
REALLY CUTE SELVAGE SPOOL

Yo’s Sew Along - Free
Mine measures 20” X 24 ½” – This will help you to know how much binding, batting and backing you will need.
You will need:
Base to sew selvages to measuring 9" X 12" (will be trimmed down to 8 1/2" X 11 1/2")
Background:
Sides next to selvages - put on next to selvages before spool ends are attached -
Sides top and bottom after spool is done
Small triangles on spool top and bottom (Flip and sew method.) -
Spool Ends - 2 @ 2 ½” X 11 ½
Binding, backing, batting - mine measures 20" X 24 1/2"
**Note – a great way to build your “thread” is to use a glue stick to place your selvages down then take to the sewing machine and stitch all at the same time.

1.Press your selvages first. It makes them easier to work with.
2.Build your selvage spool. Build them vertically.
Working across the 9” width of the foundation --- lay down your first selvage along the edge.
See picture # 1
Sew edge to edge about 1/8th of an inch from the selvage edge. Just enough to hold this first one in place.
Lay the second selvage over the raw edge about 1/8th of an inch and stitch edge to edge – continue to build your “thread” until the foundation is covered completely - then press.
**Trim to a rectangle 8 ½” X 11 ½”
See picture #2
3. From Fabric B – Background – cut 2 strips 2” X 12”
4. Sew these to the long sides of the “thread” base you built.
5. **Trim even to make this unit measure 10 ½” X 11 ½”
6. See picture #3
7. From Fabric B – Background –
 Cut 4 Sqs! 1 ¾” X 1 ¾” -set aside
8. From Fabric C - the Spool Fabric –
Cut 2 @ 2 ½” X 11 ½”
9. On the long edge of one of the spool ends - lay down 2 of the small squares, draw line corner to corner and sew corner to corner to do a flip and sew.
10. Repeat with the other spool end.
11. Note - make sure to sew one needle width to the inside of your drawn line.
See picture # 4
See picture # 5
